Fast and Furious 7
We get close ups of the technical gadgets that are in the cars, as well as this the medium shots of them driving show the cars to be extremely advanced which can connote the skills of the drivers. The technical gadgets and the ‘awesome’ cars immediately appeals to the demographic of males, who would watch this movie to escape from the real world and for entertainment. The close ups of these gadgets and the diegetic sound of the cars revving and hearing the speed of them as they zoom past imply a whole lot more action into the trailer, therefore successfully meets their criteria of an action film. This is followed by the close ups of the guns all pointed out from the large grey truck, where a character activates a button to make his car bulletproof. The next shot shows a close up of a weapon rising from a car and blowing up the truck. A medium shot of the characters being blown away is extremely effective as it is shown in slow motion which makes everything much more dramatic due to the focus of that feature being slowed down compared to the fast and up beat atmosphere we have cut from and will cut back into.
The audience are shown a young girl who was kidnapped in the truck, where the character says “don’t worry I will get you out of here”. This implies he is heroic and there are villains, which follows the codes and conventions of an action movie. A medium shot of the truck hanging of a cliff is shown with the main character hanging of the edge, this is all extremely dramatic and is successful as by this point it will have the audience on the edge of their set, constantly anticipated by the action.
An establishing shot of the night life of the modern city Atlanta is shown, this is effective as most action films are set in modern cities. This is because they are busy, rushed and anything can happen in a city therefore it adds more drama. The next shot is effective due to a car crash where we hear the diegetic sound and get a close up of the glass shattering. This cuts into a close up of a character walking away on the phone, with the explosion behind him replying on the phone “well you know me now.” This is effective as it shows the characters to be powerful and capable of anything. We get a long shot behind all the main characters standing in front of the large city, this is effective as it shows they are looking over their city that they make a better place. The audience can also see that the action has just begun and that there is a lot more to offer.
The fast paced non diegetic sound and fast editing shots showing high tech weapons and fights again add action. We are shown a medium shot of girls in hardly any clothing dancing on tables, which adds to the atmosphere of the city and implies females to be shown as sex toys, persuading males to watch this film. We then are shown a medium shot of a main character holding a women’s hand in a red dress, the red dress can connote the women to be dangerous therefore the audience can be ready for the unexpected. It also adds romance into the film which is successful as can interest females to watch the movie, widening the demographic.
Finally, the title relates to the film and the genre by having a typical black background and white writing with tinted orange and red underneath, creating bold colours and again connoting danger and fire.
