Action

Iron Man 3

The opening shot is a long shot of the sun setting; straight away we have upaced beats creating tension and suspense for the audience. From the sun set we can connote this is a countdown for when the drama begins which also helps with the tense atmosphere. We fade in and out of black giving the character that is known as Iron Man most prevalence which is effective because they want the audience to be engaged with him the most. The voiceover of his deep voice telling his background story is effective in telling the audience who he is making them feel like they are more involved in the movie. He then says “and I occasionally save the world”, the way he adds this on at the end gives of a humorous scent of the movie, with a long shot of him flying in the air in his high gadget suit. The audience already like who he is and has been shown what he does is for his girlfriend. We then get a close up of his face looking anxious and distressed, as soon as he says “so why can’t I sleep?” the movie becomes louder and faster, we cut through shots of a comic magazines which relates to the fact that this film is an action and gives off that traditional cartoon atmosphere, this links in with the recognisable name and logo of ‘MARVEL’.

With the agile music creating enough suspense we get an establishing shot overlooking the city, we get the orange lit sky where the sun is still setting continuing on from the countdown, this dominates the shot due to the all the buildings etc. being shadowed. We seamlessly cut from this shot to a tracking shot behind a man who we may infer is the president. This is effective as we cannot see his face therefore creates a mystery in the trailer which can add curiosity for the audience. As well as this he has soldiers all both lined at his sides saluting him to infer he is high up and a powerful character. We get a medium shot of Iron Man flying down and saluting this president, insisting that the president is also a good guy as we know Iron Man plays the role of a hero. We then get a close up of another mystery man wearing a cape hooded over his face, he is shown to be quite creepy and ominous when shown in low key lighting and only getting shots of the side of his face. We cut from close ups to a long shot of an explosion taking place, affecting civilians, we get a close up of this characters bare feet dragging along the ground with bit form the explosion surrounding him including bodies. We then get a voice over of what we can infer is this characters voice saying “ you don’t know I am, you’ll never see me coming” suggesting that he is going to be their protagonist and who iron man will have to face in future preferences. Throughout him saying this we get a medium shot of the back of his face taking down his hood and having a tattoo on the back of the neck, we can infer that this could symbolise something and is normally used in action films to show they are a part of a group.

From this we cut into a medium shot of an airplane, we hear the diegetic sound of its speed getting the audiences adrenaline pumping and adding to the non-diegetic sound giving a bigger emphasis as the sound has increased to its maximum. This medium shot shows the side door flying off the plane, leading to a seamless shot of passengers holding onto dear life and being pulled out from the plane by the intense force. We then have the iron man being bombarded by the news asking him “what are you going to do about these attacks?” As he puts his head down and doesn’t say anything the audience could get anxious to what could happen next as the trailer leaves it on a cliff-hanger. For example, will he save the world? And will he win? This fear of him not doing anything then increases for the audience as he exclaims things are different and he needs to protect his beloved girlfriend. The romance in this genre is effective as it then may appeal to a female audience but as well as this it is alluring for the men, known as ‘The Male Gaze’ theory. We get a medium shot of the female we see she wears dark red lipstick which increases the sex appeal as we are drawn to her lips, linking in with the male gaze theory.

We get a close up of the protagonist looking right in the camera, giving direct address to the audience as he tells Iron Man this is the last day of his life. From here on we get fast upaced shots, we close ups of bombs exploding in his wardrobe, making the glass shatter, we get a close p of a female being blown away by it. As a bomb hits each compartment we got a beat which was effective as it implies that is the bombing sound and makes it much more dramatic. We then get close ups of Iron Man rolling around on the floor connecting to the bit of his suit, as he flings in the air the last piece to fit is his face. Before the robotic mask goes on we see his face full of anger and determination. From here the audience can see that Iron Man is going to fight the protagonist, following the codes and conventions of an action genre.

However, we then get a high angle shot of him lying there injured, the high angle shot represents him as weak with the power being taken away from him. We get a close up of the female putting the mask to her head; this suggests the protagonist is winning as she does this with sadness but hope. The protagonist is allays shown in dark and low key lighting which shows him as dangerous as well as he dark black cape which gives off that evil atmosphere. We are then shown Iron Man actually talking to the news as he says ”I’m not afraid of you” we cut to fast paced editing of him getting ready for the pig fight, getting a new robotic costume and we advanced weapons. We see him flying citizens out from trouble, showing he is back in the game! The last shot we are shown before the title the music goes silent giving off that tense effect as iron man jumps off the building, seeing the city lights onto a robot. We see and hear the explosion as the robot falls to the ground.
