Production Titles

In our production titles, I went on adobe premier elements 10, browsed these photos from the documents  and selected them to start editing. I began with a zoom as this was a common way of production titles to open  in other trailer and looked effective. Then I added the transition of black and white which goes into colour. This was effective as it added a unique touch and will make our trailer look more professional. We then added the tile and with faded it in and out. Our final stage was adding in the additive dissolve, a professional way to add to the production title before cutting got the next one, making it have a seamless appearance.

For our second production title I kept the first photo large, then duplicated the same photo and shrunk it to emphasise the  transition of zoom boxes. Lastly, adding text, fading in and fade out to allow similarity between the two production titles. Finally I added added alpha glow to both photos which made them appear brighter and more enhanced.

Opening titles

Opening titles allowed us to decide which font type we preferred to incorporate in our trailer, and we went with the Adobe Ming STD, one we researched in our practice font titles. The reason we chose this font is because it was most suitable for our horror trailer as the sinister and and mysterious look was intriguing and adheres to the conventions of a horror. We then believe this font and title can successfully engage an audience who is interested with this genre. Although our favourite opening title is the white writing against a black background, I changed the background to dark blue to give the title some texture and see what this look liked. We believe using a dark blue would still give off that eerie atmosphere but do prefer the modern day black background, white font.

Actor Description

Charlotte Weston:

The reason we have chosen Charlotte Weston to play our main role as the vulnerable young adult in our trailer is due to her experience in the drama industry as she has attended theatre school since she was seven years old; has achieved grade 6 in her music and drama exams. Playing lead role in Annie, Hairspray and Cats this infers that she has the confidence to be put up in front of a camera and perform a fantastic performance. This then implies that her acting will be much more advanced, overall making our trailer look more professional.

Jack Jennings:

We have chosen Jack to play our antagonist in our trailer. He attended Brit School and came out to achieve a job in lighting. He works in the drama industry, but does lighting, setting and sound for performances. Due to him being reasonably tall as he is 22 we decided that this will make our trailer look more professional as we do have an adult for our antagonist compared to a  boy our age.

Sarafina:

Sarafina. who plays the role as a young girl in a middle class family, showing her life is all well and happy, before taking the turn for the worse, juxtaposing to the older actress Charlotte Weston who represents a young frightened girl who has nobody. Sarafina currently takes drama at her school as well as attending an outside drama club. She has taken part in acting in plays such as Wizards of Oz and Snow White.  She is 9 years old but we found she had a lot of confidence when performing due to experience in front of audiences.

Online Tutorials and Comments

The victim, played by Charlotte Weston will need to have a natural but feminine look as she is at home, expecting a quiet and normal night in. Therefore, I have looked at natural make up tutorials that will allow me to achieve a look most suitable for our character. The products we are mostly like to use is foundation, powder and blusher to give her that glow. We aren't too focused on the lips or eyes as again, we just want it to look natural. For her hair we would like to incorporate the plait, this could be successful as it may remind the audience of a young girl adding to her vulnerability.

For our antagonist, I found this tutorial was the most useful however we wouldn't want to copy everything as our antagonist is a male. From this tutorial I found that the effects of shadowing would be effective in our trailer as that is what the antagonist will be displayed as.Throughout our trailer the antagonist is only shown in dark and is contained as a mystery throughout to add enigmas for the audience. This has given us the idea to use dark eye shadows such a grey and black to contour the face to add shadow and depth into it.

Representation and Stereotyping in our film

In our two minute trailer we followed the representation and stereotyping in our film by following the conventions of a horror. For example, we have incorporated the character of a vulnerable girl who moves into a house that is on sale that no one has lived in for years. This is stereotypical as the audience can put themselves in the characters shoes and know that they would not move into a house that hasn't been sold for years in an abandoned street. This adds tension to the fact that we know something bad is about to happen. However, the girl is portrayed as 'stupid', a representation of young girls in horrors as she is oblivious to the danger and her surroundings. There is also an antagonist, who is displayed as a dark figure and sneaks into her house. When she hears a noise and goes upstairs this is where it shows the girl to be stupid which is a representation for girls in horror movies to be. This then frustrates the audience and puts them on the edge of their seat. The antagonist is a man, which again is a representation as men are displayed as dangerous and threatening towards younger girls, therefore this can make the audience feel even more tense. This is because men are known to be strong and dominant compared to a weak girl that us, as the audience, feel we need to protect.

The setting we then chose was a house; when we show the house in the trailer it is going to be shown when it is pitch black outside to create more of a creepy and frightening atmosphere, which is stereotypical for a horror. We aren't incorporating the representations such as a haunted house, demons, etc as we want this horror movie to be quite realistic so the audience can put themselves in that situation to add to the thrill and scare of the trailer. I believe this is successful as it will make it much more mysterious and frightening compared to the supernatural. The house is also intriguing as everybody is meant to feel safe and secure in their own loving home, however the way we portray the character and the home we can see that she is far from safe.

Still Day 1 of Filming

This is a short film to show the first day of filming and some of the behind the scenes funny moments.
first of all we decided to do some establishing shots in the garden as we were aware of timing and in the winter it gets dark very quickly. before the actors came to the location, we finalized all of the shots of the family so that we were organised and we were able to get the filming done quickly. We also made sure any of the shots that didn't involve the characters were done before they arrived to save time. We were also aware of the age of our actress, Serafina and were conscious of her staying up too late.

To make sure every shot was suitable we did two takes of every shot. this allowed us to decide on the best ones when i comes to editing. we also allowed a couple of seconds before and after the shots whilst filming so that we had room to cut in tot he takes.

Questionnaire

What is your gender?
Female 60%
Male 40%
Although we wanted to ask each gender equally as we believe it would be a provide balanced argument we ended up asking more females due to availability.

What is your age?
12-14 1%
15-17 58%
18 + 41%
Here we can see the main audience ranges between 15-17, this is because we wanted to make our age certificate a 15.

What do you expect to see in a horror genre?
Possession 25%
Mystery 20%
Death 55%
By asking this question we can see that audiences mostly enjoy the topic being involved around a death therefore we could interpret our movie to involve some some of tragic event.

Which film title is best for our trailer?
Elle 70%
Back again 25%
The flashback 5%
The title is important for our trailer as it is the first thing that will attract an audience. Elle was the most popular by far, as names are quite a popular title allowing us to be certain that Elle is the right title for us.

Where would you expect a horror to be set?
A rural setting e.g. forest 30%
A urban setting e.g town 35%
In a home 35%
In a home and an urban setting are the two most popular, this tells us that we could use both those settings to engage the audience.

What type of non dietetic sound do you expect to hear?
Up paced 55%
Slow 3%
High pitched 15%
Low pitched 25%
No sound 2%
Up paced, low pitch music are the two that are most popular, this gives us an idea of what non diegetic and diegetic sound we can add to really add that tension and suspense.

Would you expect an antagonist and victim in a horror?
Yes 50%
No 50%
Here we have a balanced argument between the two, which could give us more of an option to whether we are going to have one r not.

Animatic Storyboard

Costume Research

When it came to costumes we wanted it to the fit in with the atmosphere of a happy family home, therefore the mother and father are dressed in casual wear to tell the audience that this is a normal day. The actor who plays the father is dressed wearing a casual jumper with a shirt underneath showing his relaxed format but sophistication due to this interpreting a middle class family.
The mother is similarly dressed to create the same feeling towards the audience.
The young girl fits well into this, coming home from school for a typical evening. The reason we want to succeed such a neutral and happy surrounding is because it exaggerates the difference between her life now and what it use to be like as a young child, adding curiosity to what happened. A school uniform shows her vulnerability. I believe this follows the codes and conventions of a drama as immediately  the audience we want the young girl to be safe and protected.

Soundtrack Research

For our film I decided to research some soundtracks to help me decide which type of soundtrack would be the best for our genre. I was looking for a soundtrack that starts of calm, gradually building up creating tension for the audience, reaching a climax when there appears to be a dead body in the house. Researching soundtracks also inspires me to what type of instruments would be most suitable for our film for example, in our film we knew a piano would be suitable as it is successful as creating an eerie and tense atmosphere which is what our group wish to succeed.

Due to our trailer being a horror genre, I decided to research music that would add tension and lead to a climax as I believe this will make our trailer seem more dramatic. I have found some soundtracks that I would like my trailer to incorporate. This is the soundtrack from the trailer 'Taken'. At the beginning of the track it involves the diegetic sound of a piano which is very similar to our opening trailer. It provides a fairly innocent atmosphere which for our trailer would make the young girl seem very vulnerable, however the music begins to become more upbeat which is effective as it helps lead the story that something bad is about to happen. The slow, calming introduction would be complimented by slow paced shots of the flashback in the girls life, which will help make everything seem neutral, however when it becomes more up beat that's when we will begin to see the troubles of the girls life, with the editing of the shots becoming much faster creating suspense for the audience.

http://incompetech.com/music/royalty-free/music.html

The advantages of last year was that we knew a useful website that contained a variety of non copy right music to help get an insight into what would fit our piece. The first stage of this process is to choose what type of feel we wanted and we chose: Dark, Eerie, Intense, Unnerving, Mysterious. After listening to many results we came across "Controlled Chaos" where the instruments include synths and percussion. This year we are going to use two separate soundtracks and combine them together to create the perfect piece for our trailer. From this soundtrack the bit that is most appealing and suitable for our trailer begins at 1 minute as that is when the music becomes much more unnerving and begins to build up to create suspense. The unnerving quality is important for our group as we are looking for a mysterious soundtrack, to make the audience feel uncomfortable and uneasy from the tension. However, the negatives of this soundtrack is that it doesn't seem to reach a climax which is what we look for in our trailer however the up paced soundtrack would fit perfectly in our trailer.

The second soundtrack we found of the website was called "Awkward Meeting" and appealed to me due to the instruments including piano and synths. The piano, being essential to our trailer. It begins with a slow rhythm of the piano, creating a calm atmosphere. As the soundtrack progresses we get a low beat added into the rhythm every few seconds which creates more of a dark atmosphere and can connote that everything is not fine. The silence in between each piece is effective where the music becomes quieter until it fades to silence, this will fit well with the flashback where we are fading in and out of black going through the girls life. The soundtrack then becomes louder and a it more paced, this is successful as it would be easier to blend in with "Controlled Chaos" which is a loud, up paced soundtrack overall.

Actors Interview

Actors Interview

Here we interviewed who would be the mother in our trailer. By interviewing our actors it allowed us to understand more about them and what type of style they had which could possibly affect how they performed in our trailer. As well as this we can see that Caroline would fit the loving mother role which will emphasise the scene where the family are shown as a happy, nuclear family. This is very similar to Patrick who will be playing the role of the father. They are both likable characters that the audience will be able to relate with as it shows them as normal people living everyday life.

Location Research

Our location of our film is set in a semi-detached house in a suburban town in England. We chose to set our trailer here due to the warming features of a family home. However, due to the codes and conventions of genres such as horrors we know that at night a house can be come eerie and ominous and create tension, which is what we aim to do. The piano in the bottom right of the left photo is essential in our trailer as the diegetic sound may make the audience feel on edge. This juxtaposes with the happy family home which relates with what happens in the story as well. Filming in a home allows us to do a variety of shots such as over the shoulder shots, close ups of features in the house and medium shots of characters. However, during this process we have to take extra precautions to make sure there isn't anything in the background that may ruin our trailer as it is a normal family home.

Moodboard

This mood board highlights the scenes that our essential to our  trailer. For example our theme of movie will be based around a family and this is represented by the happy family being placed in the center enjoying an evening dinner together. The characters displayed at the top shows our character will consist of a young vulnerable girl, the father and the mother. The piano shows our dietetic sound that is going to be included in our trailer to add tension and build up. The house shows our location that it is going to be set in which links with the dark figure that walks into the house unaware, adding enigmas.

Film Treatment

Our opening shot begins with the father playing the piano, where we pan around the room to see the family. We then have them having a conversation around the table, which creates the atmosphere of a neutral and happy middle class family. However, as we see the mother and father angry at each other, it indicates that their life isn't as perfect as they are portrayed to be.  As the little girl interrupts her mother and gets pushed away we see her run away from all her problems.

This is then represented as we juxtapose to her as a young adult, who is shown to have nobody in her life. The audience are then going to be able to get a feel of this when she is shown to go and use a phone box but has nobody to ring. We know this as she picks up the phone and puts it down again suggesting that she has not even dialed a number yet but gives up anyway.  This allows her to be represented as the stereotypical vulnerable and lonely young adult that she is.

When she finds a scratch card on the floor slightly hidden, she moves into a warming home, cheap off the market. However, she does not realize that the house she gotten so cheap is haunted, in the way of an unknown killer targeting a certain group of people of the same gender.

The tension starts to increase as we are shown missing posters of young adult girls who lived in that house and the audience are aware that  'Elle' our character has moved into a haunted house targeted by a killer.

Sitting by the front door having a cigarette, her lighter flickers out, running into the kitchen to get a new one which is when a black figure walks through the door and up the stairs. Unaware of his presence, Elle begins to go upstairs. As she is about to get into the shower she hears little girls laughing. She looks out the window to find no one is there. Tension is still building up as audience are unaware of what is going to happen next.

After the shower she goes into her wardrobe wearing a robe and picks out clothing, the killer stands behind her and as she feels someones presence she turns around in shock, dropping her clothing. However, nobody is there and her and the audience feel a sigh of relief. She turns back in her wardrobe feeling stupid and paranoid. However, when she feels something brush against her leg she slowly looks down in worry and sees an arm sticking out of the wardrobe. As she screams the killer tries to grab her from behind however she pushes him off her and runs down the road. This is then incorporated with the flashback of her as a little girl running down the road fearfully. Cutting into black to the title 'Elle'. This would leave a cliff hanger to the audience wondering whether she got away and reported the killer who has been around for centuries or whether she got killed.

Film Brainstorm

Day 1 Of Filming

On October 13th the sixth form all went to a boat party and this being the third one I had been to I was aware of the scenery us as a group could capture in London. Therefore, I took many videos and pictures and came across these two to be my favourite. These shots would be successful in our film due to it being action/thriller based and these establishing shots in London make the movie look high budget. The sound in the videos would not be used and we would add non diegetic sound over to top which will be dramatic, up paced and tense to follow the codes and conventions of an action but also allow the audience to feel unnerving due to achieving a thriller as well.

However, due to having limited resources at this event it was filmed on an IPhone 5s therefore the quality isn't how we expected however, we wish to incorporate this into our trailer and make it look as professional as possible. I screenshotted this image from a panning video as i thought it could be successful to use as a single shot. However, further down in the process I may decide to incorporate the video as well.

Fonts Researched

Here I have researched the font "Lucida Sans". Due to our film being a horror we wanted to make sure we followed the conventions of the titles to allow people to recognise our genre. Our title would be displayed in capital letters like a lot of horrors to allow it to be bold. As well as this in horror films such as Taken 3 the letters are displayed slightly apart which makes the title stand out more. I then incorporated this title choosing a light grey colour and black background. This is successful in following codes and conventions of the genre as the silver/grey colour allows a sharp edge against the black ground and is still very traditional.

This font appealed to me due to the fact our genre being based on a horror. This is due to the thinner writing compared to the title above with thick and bold writing which has created more of an eerie and mysterious atmosphere, as well as being bold which is successful for that dramatic feel. The perfect mixture of these two makes it much more effective if displayed in our trailer.

Finally, this thin writing gives off a more mysterious and sinister look. This still contrasts with our trailer due to it being full of enigmas and cliff hangers therefore a more mysterious and eerie title can be effective.

Film Institution: The Major Movie Studios

Columbia Pictures:

Columbia Pictures was made in 1919 and is under the operation of Sony Pictures. It has a very recognisable label and this represents their success in the movie business. It is one of the leading film studios in the world and has made films such as ‘Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2’, ‘Skyfall’ and ‘22 Jump Street’ which have a varied range of audiences but are all exceptionally popular.

Paramount:

Paramount was founded 1912 as Famous Players Film Company then officially became Paramount pictures in 1914. They are known as one of the big six and are successful because of their high budget films such as ‘India Jones’, ‘Shrek’, ‘Friday 13th and ‘Paranormal Activity’. They have made a wide range of genre and their horror films were hugely successful allowing us to question whether horror or action will be better for our chosen genre

Warner Bros:

Warner Bros studios was found in 1903 by the four Warner brothers. It is American producer of film, television, and music entertainment. As well as this, they also famously started the original ‘Looney Tunes’, as well as many more successful cartoons. Warner bros is extremely successful as it owns half of the CW Television Network and has made some of the most popular films invented such as Harry Potter.

Walt Disney:
Walt Disney Pictures is one of the most well-known film institution out of all the major movie studios. It was found in 1923 and was immediately extremely popular. Disney is constantly apart of life as played a massive part in childhood. We also know the studio because of the famous founder - Walt Disney. Disney traditionally specialises in family movies and animation such as the classics, 'Sleeping Beauty' and 'The Jungle Book' to the more recent 'Cars', 'Wreck-it Ralph' and 'Up'. They also own a wide amount of film institutions such as Touchstone Pictures and Pixar. This all helps them stay successful and constantly make profits.

Universal Pictures:

Universal Pictures was founded in 1912 and It is the world's third oldest major film studio. It had many successes as it made ‘Jaws’, ‘Jurassic Park’ and ‘The Extra-Terrestrial’ which each became the highest-grossing film ever at the time of its initial release.

20th Century Fox:

20th Century Fox, founded in 1935, have one of the most recognisable logos and theme tunes in the industry, the studio used to be a subsidiary of News Corporation, but now it is currently a subsidiary of 21st Century Fox. It is the world's second largest major film studio, after Warner Bros. It has made will never be forgotten such as ‘Avatar’, ‘Star Wars’, ‘Night at the Museum’ and many more.

Film Institution: The Mini Major Movie Studios

Dreamworks Animation:
Found in 1994 Dreamworks has always been popular with the younger audiences and family types meaning ratings are mostly ‘PG’ or ‘U’. For example they include ‘How To Train Your Dragon’. They are probably the most famous Mini Major Movie studio with a highly recognisable logo.

Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer:

Founded in 1924, it became a success and well-known until an increasingly unprofitable MGM was bought by Kirk Kerkorian, who lowered staff and production costs, forced the studio to produce low-budget fare, and then shut down theatrical distribution in 1973.The studio continued to produce five to six films a year and some popular films were made out of it such as ‘Nanny McPhee’.

Lionsgate Entertainment:

Lionsgate was founded in 1997 and is commercially the most successful Mini Major Film and television distribution company in North America and the seventh most profitable movie studio. They are well-known for horror movies such as ‘Saw’ and ‘The Hunger Games’.

The Weinstein Company:

The Weinstein Company are a recent company, only formed in 2005. Weinstein films include 'The King's Speech' and 'The Iron Lady' which are already known to be a big successful bringing it profits. As more films are released the more popular it will become.

Relativity Media:

Relativity Media was founded in 2004 and is not quite low-key being one of the least famous Mini Major Film studios but is still growing. They have a lot more growing to do, and they have not made many films that have received great profit of publicity. Their films include: 'Bridesmaids' and 'Limitless'.

Certificate Research 18

18 is the highest classification rating that is placed on films. Reasons for restricting films to the 18 certificate category have included scenes of hard drug use, supernatural horror, explicit sex, sadistic violence and sexual violence. This could cause the certificate not being issued at all, banning the film in the UK. In our group we will not involve all these conventions in such detail as if we aimed to get an 18 certificate it would limit our range of audience and the most popular audience which is 15 and above making our film less popular.

Certificate Research 15

Chosen Certificate

For our film we wish to make our certificate rating a 15 as it helps maximise our audience and making it more popular to a wider range of audience. We gave it a 15 as it will contain mild violence in scenes such as where the parents argue (have spoken about this in detail n my film pitch) and when the young girl nearly gets run over. However, we are not showing extreme gore or dwelling on the pain and injury so it will fade out in black before there would be any traumatic images. Strong language will be used throughout our film to put emphasis on the man as the antagonist as it shows his dark side. At 15 there can be strong threat and horror as long as there is no sustained focus on sexualised threat which we do not contain. Therefore, we felt we didn't need to rate in an 18 as we aren't containing extremely strong sex scenes or nudity allowing it to be more acceptable for 15's and overs.

Cetficate Research 12 and 12A

The 12A requires an adult to accompany any child under 12 seeing a 12A film at the cinema but when you are 12 you do not need to be accompanied and can go with friends, making the film more popular with a bigger audience. Strong language such as the f*** may be passed or changed to a 15 certificate but more moderate language such as b*** are more likely to be passed for 12 and 12A

At 12A, moderate violence is allowed but it should not contain a lot of detail meaning there should be no emphasis on injuries or blood. In 12A and 12 there may be sight of drugs but the scene or film should not concentrate around this area.

Certificate Research PG

PG stands for Parental Guidance. This means a film is suitable for general viewing. PG films are mostly appropriate for a child aged around eight or older without causing any problems. A PG film will not contain any theme which is inappropriate for a child and can even explore issues such as bullying or racism, advertising it in a more discreet way.

Certificate Research U

The U stands for Universal. A U film should be suitable for audiences aged four years and over. A U film can explore a wide rang of themes, as long as it is appropriate for a young audience. This doesn't mean that all films rated U are aimed at children. It just means they are suitable for any age and can be anybody's type. The genre would be positive giving off positive vibes for the audience.

Shot Lists

For our trailer we will be using a variety of shots; this will help enable the audience to get a clearer understanding for our film. The main shots are long shot, medium shot and close up. This is because long shots will help in our film as we cut from long shots of the young girl running down the road oa sudden close up of her facial expressions, showing fear and worry. Therefore this will be much more effective and clearer to the audience what is going on. It will also help create suspense with the low key lighting outside as setting it in evening around pm. Medium shots are effective as it shows the characters body language as well as their facial expressions which medium shots are not meant to focus on, this is used when the parents are arguing as the 'mother' has her arms crossed to show she is angry.. Close ups create the biggest effect on the audience. This is because from a close up you can see the characters facial expressions and reactions to what is going on. This can create tension for the audience. n our film the close ups will be used to express the girls vulnerability.

Long shot:

Medium shot:

Close up shot:

We will then be using more subtle shots that have a big impact on the audience such as extreme close up, over the shoulder shot and two shot. Extreme close up is used so the audience can focus on the character alone and not get distracted by any action in the background. Over the shoulder shot allows an insight of what the main character can see from her view adding realism to shot. Two shot is a medium shot where 2 characters are put in a frame. This is important in our film as we want to use this when the 'mother' and 'father' are arguing which will have a larger impact on the audience.

Extreme close up:

Over the shoulder shot:

Shane Meadows Analysis

In the opening trailer of this film we are hovered over an establishing shot where the camera pans across the forest in fast motion. Non diegetic music is added on top of this which is quite gentle and slow, this allows the audience to be drawn into the trailer and immediately feel sympathy. We cut to a medium shot behind 2 characters walking through the forest. Due to them holding bags and wearing tracksuits and baggy clothing we can connote that these characters are poor and maybe homeless therefore this is why the non-diegetic sound is used, to help create that emotion and awareness before the audience are even shown the story. We continue to cut from and to different angle shots of them walking, as it fades into black it infers that these 2 characters have been walking for a while. In the last shot of them walking through the forest we have the man in the green jacket walking ahead while the boy in the blue tracksuit is behind. This can suggest that the man in front is a more important character die to him having more prevalence.

As we fade into a black title with hit writing saying “brothers love” we begin to understand the characters. The white writing stands out against the black background making the trailer look effective. The medium shot of the 2 brother’s s baby’s shows their love for each other. We hen cut to a close up of both the characters faces, allowing us to recognise them I more detail. After their conversation about going back to town to sort out business we can understand the one in the blue tracksuit who didn’t want to go is afraid of something which adds enigmas for the audience. What’s so bad back in town? What business does he have to sort out?

As we cut to a title, the background is black and in large, bold letter we have “VENGANCE” in orange connoting fire and anger. This is effective as the title we have seen before says “brothers love” therefore when it juxtapose to a brother vengeance the audience start to find in captivating. The music then juxtapose to become much more anticipated getting the audience in the mood. We hear whispers “what did you do to him? What did you do?” this is effective as the audience are now completely hooked into the story line needing to know what happens next!

A medium shot of gang of boys grabbing a boy and laughing at him as they have something tied around his neck. He screams “no”, here we can understand the man who wants vengeance is his older brother and as we were shown at the beginning how close they were the audience are aware he will do anything to get revenge making the story line much more dramatic. This is successful as the genre is a thriller and this follows the codes and conventions.

The next shot is my favourite as it is such a clever shot. When one of the bad boys leave their friends we have him coming round from a corner. However, in just a split second we have shown this figure in a mask in the reflection of the window. The reason why this shot is so successful Is because it allows the audience to realise he is there before the character does, however it all happens so fast that that up paced and dramatic atmosphere doesn’t disappear. After that split t second of him disappears we then cut to another angle shot of him where it is an over the shoulder shot of the bad boy, getting to see the man in the mask in more detail and for a longer period of time.

The shots start to speed up, we cut from a medium shot of a man running up the stirs in fear to another medium shot of 2 of them shouting out the window “we will find you”

We are shown a medium shot of the two brother together again, the brother who wears the mask I jumping up and down and his facial expression shows anger and determination. However, the jumping subverts this as it can show he is afraid but he knows he has to do this for his brother who was bullied. In this shot Richard the younger brother is just looking to the floor confused, this can show he is dependent on his older brother who is represented as stronger. This is then proven as we cut to a shot in the same area of Richards’s older brother talking to somebody. This guy is in all black connoting mystery and can also represent him as a dangerous man. Due to what he is wearing can show he is higher up than the brothers therefore we understand that this is serious business. This two shot is effective as in the centre of these 2 men we have Richard in the background again showing him to be dependent on his brother to sort out his problems and afraid in getting involved. We are shown the surroundings of council estates and in the houses they are very small and camped suggesting that all these people are poor which could infer they had rough up bringing’s.

Richards brothers just confessed he is the guy in the mask and a soon as w=he says that we get a sharp screeching sound and cut to a close up of the mask then long shot of him holding a hammer looking down at 2 of the bad men asleep. A close up of an over the shoulder shot shows the man in all black saying “your making me very nervous Richard” this shot so effective as we can see how close the characters faces are together compared to in the two shot were their bodies were far apart. This adds tension and suspense which is what a thriller should do. When we were cutting from these shots a flash of red took up the whole screen. This is successful as the deep red could connote blood and the death of the gang. The music is very tedious with a repetitive piano note playing constantly in the background. We get flashing shots of Richard with an axe as we hear screams. The flashing shots are effective as it adds that ominous atmosphere to that scene and makes it frightening for the audience to watch as they sit there wondering what is going on.

A medium shot of part of the gang holding a snipe up aimed at Richard. However, when we cut to a long shot of Richard we see him standing there in his own clothes and an axe in his hand, lifting up his arms and smiling inferring he doesn’t care. A close up of the man lifting the sniper closer to his eye and hearing a click from the bullet we fade into back which make the trailer look much more professional using transitions.

The last shot we see before the titles is a close up of Richard looking down to the floor then shutting his eye as we have a voiceover saying “ I can’t live with that”, implying he can’t live with the way they tormented his brother. We cut to the traditional black title and the music is high pitched, it is in the orange writing again standing out from the black background. The 4 stars may make the audience want to watch the movie as we know that is must be good to be rated this. As the lexis such as “disturbing” and “utterly gripping” will catch the target audience’s attention.

At the very end we cut through traumatic shots of violence, where we see blood written on walls, and someone pointing a gun to a man’s head tied in a plastic bag. This shows the thriller and horror side which will again intrigue the target audience.

Finally, we are shown the title at the very end. “Dead Man’s Shoes” are displayed in large bold letters. The words ‘dead’ and ‘man’ are displayed in red which adds colour to the title and also connotes the blood and death pf this movie and the word ‘man’ is displayed in white as it is traditional and also allows each word to stand out.

Magazine Cover

We have the masthead which obviously is always displayed in the largest and boldest font. The Vogue masthead changes colours but it always displayed at the top of the cover in the same font covering the whole magazine width ways. This is successful as it makes the magazine recognisable to not only the consumer base but other people who may be interested.

This magazine stands out due to the colours used. For example in this magazine the colours that stand out are burgundy, this is effective as it known as quite a feminine colour. This is displayed in the masthead allowing it to stand out against the light background, this links with Emma Watson’s lips which is a bold and glossy burgundy lipstick. This is successful as it looks seductive standing out from her pale skin; it is what the audience will be drawn to after looking at the masthead. The reason why this is so efficacious is because Emma Watson is a unique selling point here. For example, she is known from Harry Potter and has developed to become popular strong independent women that females may look up to. Therefore, having her covering the whole magazine and the magazine being aimed at females it results in a win win situation. We then see the matching colours with the jewellery she is wearing and her name which is advertised. The jewellery makes her look wealthy and works well with her glowing and dewy face. Her name is shown in large font to show that she is an important feature to this magazine and to make sure the audience knows who it is. We have the direct address enticing the audience to look directly back into her eyes. This can result in the audience reading the rest of the magazine cover and become a potential buyer which is the purpose. Her pale and glowing skin contrasts with the light fair background, making the magazine looks soft and professional. We can see with her arm up against this material it reflects the burgundy jewellery adding more colour to the magazine. The fur at the top adds a feminine touch which is successful as the target audience is females.

We have the white banner displayed across the V of Vogue, this tells information that can interest the target audience who regularly read this information and advertises the product father.

We then move onto the cover lines, the main cover line is on the right hand side of the cover. “Must-have fall looks”. As an audience we know this as out of all the cover lines it is displayed in the largest font and using black allows it to really stand out from the light background. Again, this magazine is giving advice on female fashion which they do each season. The reason why this is the main cover line is because it is a fashion magazine and a majority of the consumer based audience will read this magazine to keep up with the top trends. However, we understand that the left hand side of the cover needs to have enticing topics as the audience will read from left to right. This is successful as it shows the most glamorous parties of extremely famous celebrities that this target audience will be very familiar with and fans of such as J.Lo, Beyonce, and Rihanna. Using the right celebrities will intrigue to right target audience therefore to use these famous music artists is successful in drawing in population of older teenagers who look up to these celebrities as role models. They are also displayed in bold capital letters to stand out to the audience and represent the importance.

Magazine Cover

This magazine is successful at selling it to the target audience. For example, we have the masthead in the left corner of the poster, displayed in larger font standing out from the rest. However, we have Joseph who is displayed in the centre of a magazine shown in a medium shot covering part of Q. This can infer that the audience doesn’t need to see the whole masthead due the popularity and well-known brand. The colours of the masthead are effective as it colour coordinates with the cover lines. This gives off a more professional look of the cover and can connote it is aimed at an older target audience. Joseph in the middle is dressed in a smart suit inferring that this magazine is sophisticated as well as professional as he looks like a business man going to work. His direct address engages the audience which helps stimulate interaction with each individual reader. His grey suit contrasts with the colour Q of what we can see in the title making us look from the tile and back to him.

Below the masthead we have his name in the second largest and boldest writing, which can appeal to not only the popular audience of the magazine but fans of Joseph. From these factors we can also imply that it’s not just aimed at an older audience but also males. The white background helps all the writing stand out and again gives it that simple and mature appearance.

Opposite the logo we are shown the main cover line. It directs the audience to a page in this magazine to give advice for the ‘best’ clothes that the audience will ‘need this fall’. Again, similar to when the female magazine gives advice about wardrobe changes every season. The attributive adjective ‘best’ will appeal to the target audience and help sell the magazine even more as males may want to look like Joseph and they can do this just by buying the magazine and going to page 32. The commanding word ‘need’ is effective as it is telling the audience instead of asking.

The cover lines contains punctuation such as exclamation marks, this is efficacious as it adds that thrill to the magazine and excitement for the audience such as “lick it up!” making the topic more intriguing and the audience wanting to find out more.

Magazine Cover

The colour pink is displayed all over this magazine, suggesting the target audience is girls and maybe a younger audience. The different blends of pink are successful as it makes this magazine super girly and cute. The hot pink at the top which says “Glamour” is in the largest and boldest font displayed at the top of the magazine, this is where the audience’s eyes will be drawn to. This is successful as above it we have the strapline, this has a white background and the same colour pink to stand out, blending in with the rest of the magazine. It says “Britain’s number 1 magazine” this is successful at selling the product as it telling us it is the best which the audience will want.

We then have the celebrity which is the unique selling point of this magazine dressed in similar colours as the magazine such a red and white keeping that girly touch. She is using direct address staring at the audience which would engage the audience even more and may feel like this magazine was made for them. Seeing a long shot of her whole body allows her to show off what she is wearing which is effective as this is fashion magazine. The light pink background allows the writing displayed around the centre piece (Frankie). The writing is displayed in black as well as pink and changes in size and boldness. However, it keeps the same font throughout which is successful as they don’t want the magazine to look amateur and random. On the left hand side we then have the most popular topics such as private information into Frankie’s life, this attracts not only the target audience of Glamour magazines but this Saturdays star Frankie fans. The black adds a different colour and mood to the poster, for example it can connote the less girly side to this magazine but is mainly used to add extra colour to the poster as black is a powerful colour attracting the audience which is the main purpose.

Those girly topics shown in the cover lines such as “the heart-breaking truth” is effective as it involves love and relationships which the female audience may relate to and sympathise with. It also acts as a confident booster as females will realise it even happens to celebrities, suggesting they are not alone in this situation. Below this we then have the full stops after ‘hottest’ ‘summer’ ‘ever’. This is effective as it allows the audience to pause after each word making it much more dramatic! Below in black we then move onto the topic about boys “653 scorching boys” the attributive adjective ‘scorching’ appeals to the typical audience who enjoy seeing topless boys with six packs, again increasing popularity of the magazine with the variety. On the right hand side of the cover we have the successful advertising of the magazine as we can win a fashion internship, get thousands of freebies ad never have to pay full price for anything again. This is successful as it will definitely make more people want to buy the magazine due to the imperatives telling us that we can do these amazing things for free with no catches and no costs. We have some punctuation of exclamation marks which creates excitement to the fact of the amazing offers that only females can dream of!

Magazine Cover

This magazine would appeal to women aged from 18+. We know this by the type of articles that they speak about such as advertising girls’ clothing and talking about perfect hair styles. We can also infer this due to a young model advertising this magazine relating to the target audience.

This magazine draws the audience’s attention in straight away due to many reasons. For example, the unique selling point of this cover is the celebrity Kristen Stewart. Therefore having her cover the whole cover is successful in grabbing the audience’s attention. She is also displayed over the masthead of magazine ‘Vogue’. This is actually successful as we know that Vogue is an extremely popular magazine that has many viewers therefore we don’t actually need to see the whole word displayed at the top as we can determine what the magazine is just by the first and last letter. However, this is still displayed at the top covering the whole magazine width ways. The larger and bolder font helps it stand out from the rest of the cover.

We then have the light white background which actually blends in with Kirsten Stewarts top and makes her face and blue eyes which are engaging with the audience stand out, her direct address allows the audience to feel like this magazine was made for them. We have her in the centre of the poster again so she has that attention while the cover lines are positioned around her. We range through black, red and white writing on the poster. These colours are quite plain and simple therefore make the cover look professional as they all blend well and can also infer it is aimed at an older target audience. On the left hand side we have what looks like the more important part of information. We can infer this due to it being on the left hand side of the magazine as an a audience we alternate from the left to the right wen we read, we expect the left hand side to draw us in to allow us to want to buy the magazine. This is shown in this magazine with the second largest front being the number ‘50’. The large font draws us in and makes the front cover stand out even more. The ’50 classic looks for spring’ will intrigue the target audience to buy this magazine as many females will look for vogue magazines for guidance for what to wear every season, as vogue will not disappoint! Below in black we have attributive adjectives such as “timeless coat” and “irresistible prices”. This is effective as it will make more people want to buy the magazine for this amazing coat that is worth being advertised on the front cover. On the opposite in white we then had the rhetorical question “perfect hair at what risk?” this shows that the magazine is willing to give professional help to the target audience who want that perfect hair like Kristen Stewart.

We can connote the red infers the most important topics such as vogue, Kristen Stewart and the main topic of the magazine is all displayed in red. The reason Kristen’s name is bolder and shown in red is because red is a powerful colour and stands out from the light background, as the white isn’t so clear inferring it’s not as important and even though the black is clear it still isn’t in a large or bold font suggesting it’s not as important as the red.

Film Poster

National Treasure

This poster engages the audience straight away and lets them know the genre of the film by the colours, actors displayed in the centre of the poster showing that they are main characters and are the focus of the poster. However, Nicolas Cage is located on the left, as an audience we read from left to right therefore we see him first, he is also positioned higher than the female staring down at her while she glances up, connoting that he is the most important and dominant character. The boy and girl characters can imply that there is going to be a romance in this movie therefore this action genre can appeal to women as well as men widening the target audience. Nicolas Cage has a map on his back which implies that he will be going on an adventure and the female will be tagging along, again playing a less important role.

We then have the illumi background; the dark orange/black at the bottom is effective as it allows the poster to create the mood of danger linking in with the bright orange which looks like fire. As well as this being eye catching to the audience it shows that this action/adventure is going to be packed with intense action such as fights, traps and mysteries. The background also helps the characters to stand out. We can see Nicolas Cage is wearing a suit implying that he is high skilled and professional.

We then have the title of the film displayed at the bottom of the poster. This is engaging as it is big and bold and stands out from the dark background; the title is placed on a pyramid image which is effective as it is constantly reminding you all the adventure that we are going to see in this movie. Underneath we then have the release date in white, again standing out from the black. It is successful to place it below the title as it is what we will look at straight after. This is important on a poster as it tells the audience when the film will be coming out which can increase the amount of people that go and watch it. Below we then have the conventional red colour of the action against a dark background saying “the greatest adventure history as ever revealed” this then finally completely gives away the genre of the movie. The superlative ‘greatest’ is successful as the adjective implies that there is no adventure film better than this one enticing the audience. This links with the lexis ‘history’ implying this is not just the greatest film in the country at the moment but in the whole world.

Nicolas Cages name is displayed at the top of the poster and isn’t that much smaller than the title. This is successful as Nicolas Cage is a well-known actor that is usually shown in adventure/action films therefore having him in this movie is a unique selling point. Therefore you want to make this feature recognised so having it in white standing out from the bright orange background is a successful technique for this poster.

Film Poster

Les Miserables

The girl nearly covers the whole photo, implying that she is a main character in this movie and allowing the audience just to focus on her in the foreground. Her deep blue enhanced eyes draw in the audience’s attention; eyes are a successful feature to entice the audience as it is very persuading towards the audience’s feelings. For example, her eyes which the editor has clearly enhanced to have that effect, connotes sadness but also creates that atmosphere of softness and courage. We get that sense of courage and determination by the direct address of the young character staring straight at us. This is effective as it would engage the audience making them feel like this girl is trying to tell them something. Our eyes then adjust to the whole of her face where we can tell by her facial expression that she is in misery and has had a lot of pain in her life. The audience may also be intrigued by the age of this girl as she looks very young and fragile. As well as this we can tell that she experienced a very struggling and challenging journey as she has dirt on her face, implying she does not have the facilities to wash which can relate to the theme of this film which was meant to be back in the war times.

The poster is slightly shadowed on the right side of her face; this can connote the darker times in her life whereas the gradient of the colour gets lighter can connote the positivity in her life. The way her hair is formed blowing over her face adds an eerie atmosphere and creates mystery. The black on the right hand side can connote death and danger and in general the dark gloomy colours helps set the tone of sadness and misery but also makes the young girl stand out with the light shining on her from the left angle. This is when enigmas would be added, who is she? What role does she play?

We then have the title ‘Les Miserable’ which is displayed big and bold in gold writing. The colour gold is effective when used in this poster as it stands out from the dark background as well as this the gold connotes success and triumph. And as we look at this poster we can imply that this film will be successful as Gold gives off that rich effect and makes it seem that this film will be high quality. As well as this the triumph links in as we have the slogan ‘fight, dream, hope, love’. This is successful as the single words creates a bigger emphasis affecting how the audience feel. These words can relate to being triumphal as it suggests you should be determined in life to succeed your goals. It is quite motivating to read and can suggest again that this film is going to be powerful and emotional therefore aimed towards a female audience. This can also be due to the word ‘love’ as females enjoy a romance in the movie. We then move on to the top of the poster which some of the actors names are displayed. Anne Hathaway is an actress in this movie therefore having her name on the poster is a unique selling point for the movie as it will widen the target audience by having Anne Hathaway fans as well as a musical genre fan base. We also have the other 3 which are recognised actors which will increase the popularity of the movie even more. At the bottom we have the release date which s successful they have on the poster as it tells the audience when to come and watch the movie. The fact I is released on Christmas day implies that it could be a film to go and see with your family as Christmas day is a day to spend with their families. It is a successful date to release the film as families will go and see it instead of staying indoors all day.

Film Poster

The Last Song

The film poster is easily identified as a romance, this is because of the photographs, scenery and colours used. This is successful when advertising a film as you want it to appeal to the right target audience who will enjoy it and be satisfied from a move like this. In this case it would mainly be females aged from 14-37. It can be used to entertain, escape reality and just a film to cry to.

In this poster we have close ups of the characters face, we have Miley facing towards the camera but looking away; even know she is not giving direct address we are still drawn into her facial expression. For example this is a romance yet she looks miserable, adding enigmas for the audience. This is intriguing and adds curiosity as a romance should be full of happiness and love. Her bold and clear image can imply she is the main character and has most prevalence in the movie, this is compared to the attractive boy (drawing in the attention of the target audience) further in the background faded. As well as this he is also faced backwards, where we just see the side of his face; he maintains the same facial expression as Miley. By only seeing half of his face adds mystery to this young good looking boy; the poster overall follows the codes and conventions of a young attractive couple. By their facial expressions and the space between them we can connote that they face many problems throughout their journey of a relationship. However, we are then shown at the bottom half of the poster the characters hugging. This can imply the more romantic and happy side of their relationship. The background of the beach is successful to use for this romance genre as us girls have watched many romance movies and we know the beach is a great place to set it, this is due to us creating an image of the warm sand between our toes and expanding our creativity of a couple kissing in the sea, as well as this is just creates a beautiful scenery. In the image of this poster the waves create a calming and settling atmosphere, with the sun setting reflecting onto the sand giving off that warm feeling that soothes the audience looking at the photo. The orange tones used in this poster helps create and set again a warm feeling. Orange connotes joy and happiness and due to the high visibility of this colour it is eye catching therefore, successful to use in this poster.

The title ‘The Last Song’ is displayed in big bold writing with the colour white standing out from the typical background. The title always adds curiosity to what the film is going to be about which is intriguing and can give an idea to what the film/plot of the film will be about. We then have the date at the bottom of the poster, again in bold writing to stand out. This is effective because it allows the audience to see the release date clearly meaning more people may go and view the film. This is because if the release date was not put on then people may forget about keeping up with the movie to find out in the future when it is going to be released decreasing popularity of the film. In black writing (so not as bright and eye catching) however, still standing out from the background we have “From the Author of The Notebook and A Walk to Remember” Displaying this at the top of the poster is effective as it can target the audience who have previously watched these movies and aims to a specific audience. As well as this these 2 films are well known and popular, so by this film being from the same author of these 2 fantastic romance movies it will attract a wider audience to watch this film, not only the specific target audience who have previously watched them.

Film Poster

The Dark Knight

Jumping into the main feature of this poster which is the logo of the bat on fire on the building is very effective as the background contains dark gloomy colours such as blue and black. These colours could reflect the mood of the film for example black and dark colours are used to connote death and danger. This may make the audience more aware that is in an action genre compared to a romance which would use bright feminine colours as the dark blue and black will attract a male demographic which is successful. Therefore this fire stands out making the poster eye catching which is one of the main aims for a poster. The black starting off at the bottom and gradually getting lighter as we move up the poster is effective as it provides that gradient of colour which posters need. This poster is quite simple, not overpowering anything and making the dominant character which is batman stand out. The dark background helps the traditional white writing stand out on the poster, for example the title shown in the largest and boldest font will stand out the most. This is effective as the poster wants the audience to remember this film to then watch it. This is why the date is shown in a bold large font as it is important for the audience to remember and know the release date of the film so they can go see it in the cinema. Behind the title we have a deeper blue of the bat; again this symbol is frequently shown to remind people of this logo making it well known. The bright blue shining off around the bat adds that light to the poster which is appealing.

The simple poster is effective as batman is already a popular well known film with a recognisable logo therefore using their advantages of this they have taken these features to enhance and stand out to not only attract fans but to attract other audiences. Batman is shown from a low angle representing him as the most powerful and almost showing him as half the size of this tall building. His clenched fists represent that he is ready to fight and shows his strength. And even know we aren’t shown a close up of his face the fact he is looking down to the audience as we stare up to him it shows he is determined and engages the audience again even more without the poster having direct address.

The slogan “welcome to a world without rules” piques the audience’s interest and makes the plot seem intriguing. This can be due to the inviting lexis of ‘welcome’ drawing in the audience and making them feel like this poster was made for them. The catchy slogans are attention grabbing and a world without any rules implies there are no limits to how far this film will go, making people want to watch it. It also helps to set the tone of the mood for example, with the colours and background it makes us feel inferior and gives off quite a dark and eerie atmosphere.

Finally, the characters names which are shown in white to stand out from the background are effective in attracting a wider target audience. They put the characters names there to remind the audience of the big pop stars that are starring this film. As well as this if somebody likes that actor they may be more prone to watching the film widening the target audience and making the film more popular. For example here we have Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman, two extremely famous actors that are known for action genres therefore if the actors are good the film must be.
